## **How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile**

I am going to hold your hand while I say this… your website is your foundation, but it is not the king of your web presence when you are working in a locally based business. That crown sits on the head of your Google Business Profile.

People are creatures of ease and habit, and GBP has the heavy hitters they are looking for when it is raining inside. Your phone number is right there, your website if they need more information, reviews from real people that have been in their shoes, directions to your office, FAQ’s, specials– an optimized GBP tells the user everything they need to know to pick a roofer.

In modern SEO, it is even more important. We talked before about how AI summaries want that EEAT content and Google Business Profile feeds that engine perfectly. Where you show on the Map Pack and how often you are offered up by AI are deeply dependent on how solid your GBP is.

## The Anatomy of a Fully Optimized Profile

Okay, okay Raven, so what does “optimized” even mean? Yeah, I hear you. Optimized changes all the time but your consistent heavy hitters boil down to three big categories:

1. Services & Service Areas
2. Business Details
3. Keyword Signals

### Services & Products

Your services can be listed in a few places on GBP, and it is important to fill them all out. You have the actual service section where GBP will autopopulate what it thinks you offer based on your main category (I.e. Roofing Contractor, Remodeler, etc.). In this section, you can and should add additional services like “free roof inspections” and “insurance claim advocate”. This gives your GBP more signals to show when people search. You should also make sure every service has a description that makes sense and fits your keyword strategy.

Another area where you can list services is the products section. In this area, other types of companies may put actual products they sell, but for home services, this is another place to list your services and include high-quality pictures and descriptions.

###
Business Details

This is the section nobody talks about because it feels boring but as in most things, if you don’t have the foundation solid, you can’t build on it. Your business details are one of the strongest trust signals on your GBP. Google uses these fields to decide whether you’re a real, established company or a side-hustle that may or may not exist tomorrow. Homeowners use them the exact same way.

Inside your profile, you’ll see fields like opening date, service hours, accessibility details, payment options, and attributes like “veteran-owned,” “women-owned,” or “locally owned.” These small details are part of your “credibility stack.” When they’re filled out completely and accurately, Google feels confident showing you to more people. When they’re half-empty, Google treats you like a business that hasn’t finished moving in.

Keep everything here accurate and up to date. If you’re closed on Sundays, mark it. If you offer emergency service, turn it on. If you’re a veteran-owned or women-owned business, claim it. Every detail you fill out gives Google one more reason to trust you, and in local SEO, trust equals visibility.

### Keyword Signals

If services are the bones of your GBP, keyword signals are the heartbeat. They tell Google what you want to show up for, and GBP gives you several built-in places to feed Google those clues without sounding salesy.

The first major keyword engine is in profile posts. This is essentially the social media of Google. When you post about a “roof replacement in Mt. Juliet,” or “hail damage repair after the March storm,” that language becomes searchable. Posts also help you appear in AI-generated summaries. It is important to note that you need consistency in posts. Two or three in a row, then nothing for weeks, makes Google feel like you don’t love it anymore, and it stops calling.

The next place to plop some natural-sounding keywords is in the Q& A Section. You control both the questions and the answers here and add common questions like “Do you offer emergency leak repair?” or “Do you work with insurance claims?” and then answer them naturally with the phrases people search for. Google reads these the same way it reads page content on your website.

Then we’ve got review responses, which are one of the most powerful keyword tools on the entire profile. When you respond with something like, “Us Murfreesboro folks have to stick together! We’re glad the gutter installation turned out great,” you’ve been polite and strategic. You’re reinforcing relevant service and location cues.

Finally, don’t sleep on photo captions and alt text. When you upload a picture of a shingle replacement, label it for what it is. Not “image1234.jpg.” Not “roof photo.” Something clear and useful like “full roof replacement – Owens Corning Duration shingles – Gallatin, TN.” It’s a tiny detail, but GBP’s algorithm uses every scrap of text you give it.

Full optimization on Google Business Profile is an ongoing effort to invest in, but it is worth every minute you spend getting it just right.
