# Modern Keyword Strategy for Roofing Businesses

## The Glow Up of Google

There have been three major eras in the history of digital search. Years ago, the best way to rank in Google was to stuff as many keywords on your website as possible and attach as many sketchy links as you could. Google read your website looking for signals like links and phrases, and the more you had, the higher you ranked.

As Google evolved, there was a massive shift in the idea of helpful content. [FAQs](https://ravenized.com/google-drops-faqs-from-google-search/), case studies, a variety of keywords, and legitimate backlinks from relevant websites to yours were the way to build. The previous methods became troublemakers in the algorithm, and a spike in SEO investment came to get companies back on page one.

## How Homeowners Search Today

Now we’ve entered a new era, only this time, we are more loving to our retired algorithm. It is more like SEO Plus. Helpful content is still king, but now it has to be helpful to the AI algorithm and the human element. It is a shift from informative tones to conversational and educational. Essentially, the search engines want you to adapt to how homeowners are searching today.

To get favor, you have to expand from optimizing for “roof repair in Nashville” to answering questions like:

- “What’s the best time of year for roof repairs in Nashville?”
- “How do I know if my roof needs to be replaced?”
- “Are there financing options for roof repairs?”

The more detailed and relevant your content, the better AI will understand and recommend it.

## Keywords Still Count

While Google no longer operates on signals, it still needs just as many context clues as the rest of us. Your SEO still needs to start with keyword strategy; it just needs to be dropped in with more skill. That is where you start. What is the smart strategy that will get me seen?

## Keyword Related Terms

Before we get into strategy, there are some terms to break down because there are two types of keywords and four categories of keywords. The types are long-tail and short-tail, the intent categories are transactional, navigational, commercial and informational.

### Long-Tail Keywords

Longer, more specific search phrases (like “affordable roof repair in Nashville”) that fewer people search, but the people who are searching for them are typically more ready to do business.

### Short-Tail Keywords

More general search terms (like “roofing” or “roof repair”) that have a lot more hits, but they are vague (think getting “car roof repair”) mixed in.

### Navigational Keywords

Navigational keywords are the phrases used when someone wants to go to a specific website (“ravenized website” is navigational).

### Informational Keywords

Informational keywords are just what they sound like, they are used when someone is looking to learn something (e.g., “how to fix a roof leak”).

### Transactional Keywords

Transactional keywords are when someone is ready to make a purchase or take action (e.g., “buy roof shingles online” or “schedule roof inspection”).

### Commercial/Investigational Keywords

These are detective keywords. The user is typically comparing their options before making a move. (e.g., “best roofing company in Nashville” or “GAF vs Owens Corning shingles”).

## Building A Keyword List that Works

With all the lingo covered, let’s build a strategy. Building a successful keyword list is stepping into the shoes of your customers. What do they want from you? A new roof. What are they asking to find your website? That largely falls under three pillars that will be the framework of your SEO: Services, Locations, and Customer Concerns.

### Services

We can start from the simplest place. What do you do? Most commonly[, roofers](https://ravenized.com/winning-seo-strategy-for-roofers/) will get keywords that are pretty straightforward under the first pillar. Let’s say these are your “services”:

- Roof Repair
- Roof Replacement
- Gutter Installation
- Free Inspections

Your first bucket of keywords might look something like:

- Roof Repair
    - “Roof repair”
    - “Roof repair near me”
    - “Shingle roof repair”
    - “Metal roof repair”
    - “Roof leak fix”
- Roof Replacement
    - “Roof replacement”
    - “New roof”
    - “Roof installation”
    - “New shingle roof”
    - “Metal roof installation”
- Gutter Installation
    - “Gutter guard installation”
    - “Gutter installation”
    - “New gutters”
- Free Inspections
    - “Roof inspection”
    - “Free roof inspection”
    - “Free new roof quote”

And so on. With that first pillar as a framework, the next pillar– location– becomes a lot easier. The goal here is to catch local traffic. You may do business in Nashville, but that means you likely cover Antioch, Brentwood, Franklin, Hermitage, Gallatin etc. You want to cater to people looking for their little area around the bigger metro. Your location keywords start with where you are and branch out to close areas and nicknames for the area (Nashville is commonly called Middle Tennessee and Music City).

- “Roof replacement in Nashville”
- “Roof repair Nashville”
- “Roofing contractor Nashville”
- “Nashville roofer”
- “Roof replacement Antioch”
- “Music City roofing expert”
- “Best roofer in Middle Tennessee”

You can cast a net for words like “best roofer in TN” but unless you have several offices or a franchise, it is unlikely you want traffic in Memphis if you live in Knoxville. Six hours of driving is a bit much for a roofing lead.

With services and locations covered, we are left with customer concerns. In the past, the first two pillars were the heavy hitters, and this was an afterthought, but in the AI era this is _the_ pillar of SEO.

When search engines are hungry for helpful content, customer concerns are king. Those keywords are things that sell the job, and the questions you always get on the phone or on the job.

- “How much does a roof cost in Nashville TN”
- “Roof warranty”
- “Roof insurance claim help”
- “Nashville roofer with best reviews”
- “GAF roof installer near me”
- “How do I pick a roofer”
- “How long does a roof replacement take”
- “Affordable roofer near me”

## Making a Keyword List Into a Strategy

Now that you are armed with your list of things you would like to have your company show up for, we can load up the strategy.

Grab your list and ask yourself, “If I could only show up for eight of these, what would they be?”. Whatever you pick, you need an optimized webpage designed to make that key work shine.

This will entirely depend on what sets your company apart and what matters to you. For this example, lets be a Nashville roofer that focuses on converting repair leads into full jobs by working with insurance providers to get customers covered. Your ten pages might be:

- “Roof repair in Nashville”
- “Emergency roof repair”
- “Fast, free roof estimates”
- “Roof insurance claim advocates”
- “Roof warranties”
- “Owens Corning roof installation”
- “Roof insurance process help”
- “Roof replacement Nashville”

Once you have picked your pages, you can put other keywords under each one like an umbrella, but your main page keyword will always be the focus.
